An obsolete component, a worn casting, a fixture somebody made by hand twenty years ago. 3D scanning turns the object itself into the source of truth, and reverse engineering turns that scan into a model you can actually change, quote and reprint.
Can 3D scanners be used for reverse engineering?
Yes, and the scan is the beginning rather than the answer. A scan produces a mesh — a dense skin of triangles describing the surface as it is today, including wear, damage and dirt. Reverse engineering is the step that turns that skin into intended geometry: which face was meant to be flat, which hole was meant to be round, which radius was a design decision and which was a chipped edge.

Asking for 'a 3D scan' can mean any of these. They cost different amounts and they are useful for different things, so we confirm which one you actually need before quoting.

When scanning is the right tool, and when a caliper wins
Scanning earns its cost on organic shapes, castings, hand-formed parts and complex freeform surfaces. For a simple bracket with six flat faces and four holes, a caliper and half an hour of modelling produces a cleaner, more editable result at a fraction of the price. We will tell you which of the two your part is.
What a scan cannot recover
A scan sees the outside of an object in its current state. Internal channels, blind features, the original tolerances, the material grade and the reason a wall is 3 mm rather than 2 mm are not in the data. Where those matter, they are reconstructed from function, from the mating parts, or from an explicit assumption we write down rather than bury.
Wear, damage and what 'faithful' means
A worn part scanned faithfully reproduces the wear. Before modelling we agree which deviations are the design and which are damage — and whether you want the part as it was made or the part as it should have been made.
Rights before reconstruction
Reverse engineering an existing component raises intellectual-property questions before it raises technical ones. What is being reproduced, for what use, and on what basis is established before work starts. Where a right is unclear we say so rather than proceeding quietly.
From scan to printed part
The full route is scan, clean, reconstruct, review, print, fit-check. Each step can be the last one: some jobs stop at a measured drawing, some at a printable mesh, some run through to a small series. The proposal states where yours is expected to end and what a further step would cost.
Quoted separately and confirmed in writing before anything starts. An enquiry becomes an order once application, scope, price, schedule and responsibility are agreed.
Frequently asked questions about 3D scanning and reverse engineering
Can 3D scanners be used for reverse engineering?
Yes, but the scan alone is not a CAD model. It captures the surface as it is now; reverse engineering interprets that into intended, editable geometry.
How much does it cost to have something 3D scanned?
It depends on size, surface, required accuracy and — usually the largest factor — how much reconstruction you need afterwards. A cleaned mesh and a fully parametric CAD model are very different amounts of work.
What is scan to CAD?
The step that converts measured surface data into a parametric model with real features — planes, holes, fillets — so dimensions can be changed rather than only copied.
Do I need scanning to have a part reproduced?
Not always. Simple prismatic parts are usually faster and cleaner to measure and model directly. Scanning pays off on organic, cast or freeform geometry.
Can you scan a part that is worn or broken?
Yes. We agree beforehand which deviations count as damage and which are the design, so the reconstruction targets the part as intended rather than the part as degraded.
Is reverse engineering legal?
It depends on what is reproduced, why, and what rights apply. Rights are assessed per job before production, and an unclear case is named rather than assumed. This is general information, not legal advice.
