How much does it cost to have someone 3D print something?
Most cost guides answer a different question — what it costs to run your own printer. This one is about buying the part from someone else. Two parts of identical weight can carry very different prices, and this page shows exactly which decisions move the number.
How is the cost of a 3D printed part calculated?
A reliable price combines production time, material, preparation, any modelling hours, finishing, quality control and logistics. Material weight is one input among several and often not the decisive one. Without a file or usable dimensions we do not publish a calculator figure that would only look precise.
Geometry and size
Outer dimensions, material volume, wall thickness, overhangs, cavities and how reachable a surface is for finishing all affect the production route and the preparation. That is why a price per gram is not a fair comparison between two parts.
Material route and intended use
A display model, a fitting and a load-bearing component call for different trade-offs. The properties the part actually needs decide which route can be quoted — not the lowest material price on its own.
File quality and engineering
A manufacturable, correctly scaled file needs less preparation than a sketch, a damaged model or a physical part. Modelling, repair, scanning and design changes are separate work and appear separately in the quote rather than hiding inside a unit price.
Quantity and repeatability
Preparation can be spread across several identical parts, but a larger run is not automatically cheaper when sorting, finishing or inspection stays per-unit. A small series is assessed on the whole route, not on the print time alone.
Finishing and quality control
Post-processing, colour or appearance, fit, dimensional checks, inserts, assembly and documentation can all extend the job. Only the checks that were agreed belong to the quote.
Schedule and delivery
Target date, availability, packaging, shipping or handover are confirmed before the job starts. This page promises no standard rush surcharge and no fixed lead time.
Is 3D printing cheaper than buying the part?
Sometimes, and the honest answer depends on what the alternative is. Against a part that is still sold, printing usually loses on unit price and wins only when the original is unavailable, wrong, or would take weeks to arrive. Against a part that is out of production, there may be no unit price to compare with. At higher volumes of a simple shape, injection moulding or machining generally beats printing — and we will say so instead of quoting.

How much does it cost to have someone 3D print something?

Why is there no 3D printing cost calculator on this site?
A calculator without validated production rules gives false certainty — it prices weight and print time, then the real cost turns up in preparation and finishing. We will publish an automated estimate when the inputs, exceptions and pricing rules demonstrably hold.
Can you price a part per gram?
Weight is only one input. Machine setup, geometry, post-processing, scrap risk and quality control can matter at least as much, so two parts of the same weight can differ substantially in price.

Does a larger quantity get cheaper?
Sometimes preparation can be spread across the run, but the benefit depends on nesting, finishing and per-unit inspection. The quote makes that visible for your specific part.
Does having a 3D model made cost extra?
Modelling, repair and scanning are separate work, included only when what you supply is not print-ready yet.
How do I get a specific price faster?
