Parts, material and use

The pumpkin lantern is a round, ribbed pumpkin with a carved face, from cheerful to a little crazy. At the bottom is a screw-on lid that holds an LED tealight in place, with a loose stem on top. That makes it easy to swap the light. Designed by kraken.stl and 3D-printed by us.

Put a few side by side on a shelf, the dining table or a windowsill on the inside. You choose the main colour of the pumpkin; we print the stem in green as in the photo, or you can ask for another colour in the note field. If you want a particular face, add that too. Only use an LED light, never a real candle. An LED light is not included as standard; if you want one with it, put it in the note field.

3MF dimensions follow the embedded unit. For STL and OBJ geometry we assume millimetres; those files do not prove a unit of measurement themselves. For assembled products, outer dimensions per part are not a measurement of the finished object. A mask fit, lamp holder, load capacity or food safety does not follow from a successful slice.

Halloween lighting

Where does the jack-o'-lantern come from?

According to tradition, the jack-o'-lantern comes from Ireland, from the story of Stingy Jack. There, people carved faces into turnips and swedes, not pumpkins. Only in North America did the pumpkin become the standard shape, because there it was big, hollow and easy to find.

The legend of Stingy Jack

The story exists in many versions. The core is that Jack, a mean and cunning man, outwitted the devil twice. When he died, heaven would not have him and neither would the devil. All he got was a glowing ember to wander around with in the dark.

According to tradition, Jack put that ember in a hollowed-out turnip as a lantern. That is how he became Jack of the Lantern, later shortened to jack-o'-lantern. Nobody knows for sure exactly how old the story is.

From turnip to pumpkin

In Ireland and Scotland, around the old harvest festival, people carved faces into turnips, swedes and beets. According to tradition, the idea was that those faces kept wandering spirits at a distance.

When many Irish people left for America in the nineteenth century, they took that custom with them. There, the pumpkin was much easier to hollow out than a hard turnip, and it was bigger. That is how the orange pumpkin with a face became the image we now know everywhere.

  • Turnips and swedes: small, hard and awkward to hollow out.
  • Pumpkins: big, soft inside and easy to carve.
  • A real pumpkin usually only stays nice for a few days after carving.

A jack-o'-lantern that does not rot

Our pumpkin lantern follows that old idea: a hollow fruit with a face and a light inside. Only it is 3D-printed, so it will not go mouldy and you can put it out again every year.

Instead of an ember or a candle, you use an LED tealight. The screw-on lid at the bottom holds it in place. An LED light is not included as standard; if you want one with it, put it in the note field. We print to order and deliver within 30 days at most. If you need it for 31 October, put that in the note field; we will confirm by email.
