Why do people put ducks on cars?
It started in Canada in the summer of 2020, as a small friendly gesture between fans of a particular kind of off-road vehicle: you put a rubber duck with a friendly message on a stranger's car. The idea went around the world via social media. It is called ducking.
How it began
In July 2020, in the middle of the coronavirus period, Allison Parliament from Ontario bought a bag of rubber ducks in the small town of Bancroft, actually as a joke for her partner. Outside she saw a heavily modified off-road vehicle. She had no paper with her, so she wrote a compliment on a duck and put it on the car.
The owner saw it happen, loved it and encouraged her to post it online. With a hashtag added, it had 2,000 followers within two hours. According to Parliament, the gesture spread to more than 80 countries; she herself had ducks from 18 countries in her car, including from the Netherlands.
What makes it fun?
- It is small and harmless: a duck costs little.
- It makes someone's day a bit better, without you knowing each other.
- You can pass it on: whoever gets a duck can give one away themselves.
- The ducks on the dashboard become a collection of friendly moments.
Passing on a duck yourself?
Place the duck so it does not blow away or damage the car, for example on the door handle or by the mirror. Add a short, friendly note so the owner understands what it means. And keep it cheerful: it is about a smile, not a joke at someone else's expense.
This duckling does not belong on the dashboard
Our duckling is not a rubber bath duck, but a 3D-printed clicker with a keyboard switch inside. Hang it on your keys or bag, and do not leave it in full sun behind the windscreen: ordinary print plastic such as PLA softens from about 55 to 60 °C, and behind glass it can get hotter than that in summer. Which plastic copes better with heat, you can read in the knowledge-base article PLA or PETG. And what a fidget clicker actually is, we explain with the witch's cauldron clicker.
More background: PLA or PETG: choose by use, heat and load.
