What does a work-order app do?
A work-order app lets the technician record the job on a phone: hours, materials, photos and a customer signature. That order goes straight to the office so administration does not retype it.
That retyping is the whole return. If nobody is retyping a stack of orders today, a work-order app does not pay for itself — however good the app is. First count for a week how many orders are retyped, how many go missing and how often the technician is called back for something already on the order.

Is there a simple work-order app?
Yes, there are Dutch providers with simple work-order apps, usually per user per month. We name none here and give no ranking: we do not sell them, do not use them daily and have not tested them side by side. A shortlist with a winner would sound more honest than it is.
What can be said is what to watch for. These four questions separate a simple app from a package you leave again within a year.
- Can you get your own data out again? Ask for an export of orders, customers and hours before you start, not when you want to leave.
- Does it talk to the package you already have? An order you still retype into accounting moves the problem instead of solving it.
- Does it work offline? In a crawl space or meter cupboard that is not an edge case.
- Can the technician use it without training? If training is needed for one form, the form is too big.
Is there a free work-order app?
There are free entry versions, and they are rarely free in the sense you mean. The limit usually sits on orders per month, users, your own logo or exactly the accounting connection — the part you came for. So do not calculate with today's price but with the price at the number of technicians you will have in a year.

Work-order app for freelancers and small teams
If you want a work-order app as a freelancer, check your accounting package first. Many Dutch accounting and invoicing packages already include a work order, timesheet or job sheet. A separate subscription beside it means two places with customer data and two places that do not stay in sync automatically.
For one or two technicians the order is almost always: template, then the feature in the package you already pay for, then a separate app. Skipping a step in that order costs money you had not spent on the previous step yet.
Trial with five orders
Judge a free work-order app with your own trial
Check the terms on the day of the trial. "Free" can mean a trial period, a limited version or a free download with paid sync. Keep the current vendor page and check date with your assessment; do not take a price or limit from a search result alone.
Create five synthetic work orders with hours, material, a photo placeholder and a fictional approval status. Export them and check that five unique order IDs, all required fields and attachment references come along. Four export rows for five entered orders fails: four present plus one missing is five.
Test offline only if the vendor claims that for the chosen version. Then disconnect, close and reopen the app and check local status, sync and duplicates. An open screen alone does not prove offline work succeeds.
- Ownership: orders, customers and hours are exportable in a readable format.
- Limit: five trial orders fit inside the current free boundary without a pay step.
- Users: the intended number of roles can perform the task.
- Handoff: the export or existing connection prevents retyping.
- Exit: export and deletion route are recorded before the account is closed.
When a custom work-order app is on the table
Rarely, and later than people think. A custom work-order app is only defensible when standard packages have been reviewed and fall short on one identifiable point: a chain from planning to order to hours to invoice that no product completes, or a connection no vendor supports.
