Why something other than sweets?

After a round of the street, children often have a bag full of sweets. Something different then stands out. It is also nice for children with an allergy or a diet who are not allowed to eat many sweets.

You do not have to replace everything. Some people put out two bowls: one with sweets and one with small gifts, so children can choose for themselves.

Ideas that work

• Halloween stickers or temporary tattoos.
• Pencils, erasers or small notebooks with a spooky theme.
• Glow-in-the-dark bracelets, handy in the dark on the street.
• Small colouring pages or puzzles.
• For older children: a small keychain or a desk trinket.

With sweets, always choose individually wrapped pieces. They are tidier, and parents can see at home what they are.

Common mistakes

• Handing out small parts or marbles to children who may still be very young.
• Unwrapped sweets or home-baked treats in an open bowl.
• Buying things that are too expensive, so you run out of stock halfway through the evening.
• Forgetting what time the youngest children come round; they are often out early.

Does the pumpkin clicker belong in the bowl?

The pumpkin clicker is more of a personal little gift than something for a big bowl at the door. It is decoration, not a toy, and not suitable for children under 3 because of the small parts. At the door you do not always know how old the children are, and younger brothers and sisters often come along.
