About Lynx

This lynx is one of the animals from Biocraftlab's Boreal Forest series. You recognise it by the tufts on its ears, the short, stubby tail and the broad paws, which the designer calls snowshoe paws. Its four legs and neck are hinged, so it stands, lies down or looks to the side. The figure is printed in one piece, with the hinges built in. Designed by Biocraftlab.

We print it in the colours you see in the photos: grey with black spots and black ear tufts. Hang it on your keys or bag, or stand it on a shelf. Key ring included. This is decoration, not a toy; not suitable for children under 3 (small parts).

Does the lynx live in the Netherlands?

Not as a resident. According to the Dutch distribution atlas (NDFF), there are no confirmed sightings of a wild lynx in the Netherlands. Here the lynx counts as a vagrant: one may occasionally pass briefly through South Limburg, but that has not been proven.

Close to the border

In the Voeren area of Belgium, just below South Limburg, a lynx was seen several times between September 2005 and February 2006, including four times in car headlights. According to Natuurmonumenten, a lynx may have been filmed in the Voeren area again in 2018. In 2020 a lynx was captured on a wildlife camera in the Semois valley in the southern Ardennes, and in 2019 one was seen on the Lüneburg Heath.

In Germany, lynx live among other places in the Harz, where they were released between 2000 and 2006, and in the Palatinate Forest, where that happened between 2016 and 2020.

A shy hunter

According to Natuurmonumenten, a lynx has a territory of at least 100 square kilometres. It is shy, lives alone and is mostly active at dusk. It mainly hunts roe deer.

Is the Netherlands suitable?

Research by Michiels and Leeuwis, for ARK Natuurontwikkeling and the Dutch Mammal Society, showed that the Netherlands does have suitable habitat, mainly on the Veluwe, with some 900 square kilometres. More green corridors would be needed to get there, though. The researchers consider it very unlikely for now that a lynx will settle here permanently any time soon.

Think you see a lynx?

  • If you can, take a photo or video.
  • Look for the features: black ear tufts, a short tail with a black tip, very long legs and broad soles.
  • Note the place and time.
  • Report the sighting via Waarneming.nl, so experts can assess it.

A lynx you can actually see

Biocraftlab's lynx has exactly those features: ear tufts, a stubby tail and broad paws. The hinges in its legs and neck make it move, but it is not made of soft or rubbery material: the movement is in the hinges. You can read about the difference between hinged printing and truly flexible print material in the knowledge-base article on flexible 3D printing.
