About Jerboa
This jerboa belongs to Biocraftlab's desert animals. It has big ears, springy hind legs and a long tail with a little tuft at the end. The body is hinged from nose to tail. The figure is printed in one piece, with the hinges built in. Designed by Biocraftlab.
We print it in the colours you see in the photos: grey-beige with light legs and a light, segmented tail. Because of its thin legs, it hangs best on your bag, not among a heavy bunch of keys. Key ring included. This is decoration, not a toy; not suitable for children under 3 (small parts).

Why does a jerboa have such long hind legs?
Because it moves by hopping on two legs. Jerboas are small rodents from the deserts and steppes of North Africa and Asia, with very short front legs and exceptionally long hind legs. With those long hind legs it also escapes predators with unpredictable jumps.
A long tail for support
A jerboa uses its long tail to keep its balance while jumping, and as a prop when it sits upright, writes Encyclopaedia Britannica. Jerboas belong to the family Dipodidae.
During the day they shelter in a burrow, and at night they look for food: seeds, plant parts and insects.
Escaping with unpredictable jumps
In 2017, researchers writing in the journal Nature Communications compared jerboas with desert rodents that walk on four legs. The jerboas moved much more unpredictably: they often switched their way of moving, sped up and slowed down, made turns and also jumped upwards. That makes it hard for a predator to predict where the jerboa will go.
According to that study, jerboas use three ways of moving: hopping, a kind of skipping gait and running. When hopping they accelerated and braked the hardest.
Keeping your jerboa looking good
- Hang it on the included key ring, and preferably hang that ring on your bag rather than among a heavy bunch of keys.
- Move the legs gently: the hinges are small and fine.
- Remove dust between the hinges with a soft brush.
- Do not leave it in full sun behind glass: ordinary print plastic such as PLA softens from about 55 to 60 °C.
Biocraftlab's jerboa
The figure shows that build well: big ears, thin long hind legs and a tufted tail, with hinges from nose to tail. Such thin legs and a fine tail are exactly the parts where layer height makes a difference when printing: thinner layers give finer details but take more time. You can read more about this in the knowledge-base article on choosing a layer height.
As a gift, the jerboa is a fun choice for someone who loves desert animals or small rodents, or simply figures that are a little different from the usual animals on a keyring.
