What is the difference between the bald eagle and the white-tailed eagle?
They are two related species from the same genus, Haliaeetus. The most striking difference is in adult birds: the bald eagle has a bright white head and tail on a dark brown body, the white-tailed eagle, the sea eagle of Europe, a pale head and only a white tail. The bald eagle lives in North America; the white-tailed eagle also breeds in the Netherlands.
Two cousins
Both species live near water. According to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the bald eagle mainly eats fish, but also waterbirds and carrion. According to the Dutch bird protection society Vogelbescherming, the white-tailed eagle eats fish, waterbirds and carrion.
The US Congress chose the bald eagle as the national emblem of the United States in 1782. The white-tailed eagle is the largest eagle in Europe, with a wingspan of 193 to 244 centimetres. Birdwatchers call it a flying barn door.
Both species build huge nests that they use for years. A bald eagle nest can grow to about three metres wide and weigh half a tonne.
How to tell them apart
- Head: bright white in the adult bald eagle, pale in the adult white-tailed eagle.
- Tail: white in both as adults; short and wedge-shaped in the white-tailed eagle.
- Young birds: the white-tailed eagle is dark brown with light spots; the bald eagle is mottled brown and white and only gets a white head and tail at around four to five years.
- Range: North America versus Europe.
The white-tailed eagle in the Netherlands
The white-tailed eagle was a rare winter visitor for a long time. In 2006 a pair bred in the Oostvaardersplassen for the first time, and after that the number grew: according to Vogelbescherming there were 45 breeding pairs in 2025. The best places to see one are the Oostvaardersplassen, the eastern Randmeren, the Biesbosch and the Lauwersmeer.
Biocraftlab's eagle
The figure is clearly the American variant: a white head with a yellow beak above a brown body with feather texture. Those fine feathers are a nice detail for a print, because the thinner the print layers, the sharper such small structures become. What layer height does to detail and print time, you can read in the knowledge-base article on choosing a layer height.
More background: 3D printing layer height: 0.12, 0.20 or 0.28 mm?.
