About Crocodile

This crocodile by Biocraftlab is made of hinged parts. The body is divided into segments and the legs move too, so it wiggles and bends like a real crocodile. It is a movable figure, not a game where the jaws snap shut. According to the designer, it is printed without support, with a layer height of 0.2 mm. Designed by Biocraftlab.

We print it in the colours you see in the photos: bright green with white eyes and black pupils. Key ring included. This is decoration, not a toy; not suitable for children under 3 (small parts).

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a crocodile and an alligator?

Look at the snout and the teeth: an alligator has a broad U-shaped snout and hidden lower teeth, a crocodile a narrower V-shaped snout where the large fourth lower tooth stays visible. More about this in the guide on this page.

What moves on the crocodile, and how do I attach it to keys or a bag?

The body is divided into segments and the legs are hinged, so it wiggles and bends; nothing clicks and the jaws do not snap shut. Hang it on the included key ring, on your keys or your bag.

What does it cost (€19 incl. VAT), what colour is it printed in, is a key ring included and when is it delivered?

What is the difference between a crocodile and an alligator?

The quickest difference is in the snout and the teeth. An alligator has a broad, U-shaped snout, and when its mouth is closed you usually see no teeth of the lower jaw. A crocodile has a narrower, V-shaped snout, and with a closed mouth teeth of the lower jaw stay visible, especially the large fourth tooth.

Snout and teeth

An alligator has a kind of overbite: all the teeth of the lower jaw fall inside those of the upper jaw. The large fourth tooth on each side of the lower jaw fits into a socket in the upper jaw and so cannot be seen. In a crocodile, that large fourth tooth stays visible when the mouth is closed.

That grin with teeth pointing up and down is therefore typical of a crocodile.

Where they live

  • Alligators: there are only two species. The American alligator lives in the south-east of the United States, the much smaller Chinese alligator in the Yangtze region.
  • Salt or fresh: crocodiles are usually found in salt water, alligators mainly in fresh water.
  • Salt glands: in 1981 Taplin and Grigg described salt glands in the tongue of the saltwater crocodile, which excrete concentrated salt.

Colour and family

According to Encyclopaedia Britannica, alligators are usually grey or black, and crocodiles olive green or light brown. Caimans belong to the same family as alligators.

The skin differs too. Crocodilians have tiny sense organs in their skin that feel touch and vibrations in the water. In alligators and caimans these sit only on the head, in true crocodiles also on almost every scale of the body, as research by Leitch and Catania from 2012 showed.

Biocraftlab's crocodile

Biocraftlab's figure is made in a cartoon style, with a round snout and big eyes. The designer calls it a crocodile, and the rows of spikes on its back make it instantly recognisable as a crocodilian. According to the designer, it is printed with 0.2 mm layers. What that layer height means for detail and print time, you can read in the knowledge-base article on choosing a layer height.

More background: 3D printing layer height: 0.12, 0.20 or 0.28 mm?.
