An adhesive name alone cannot predict a joint. Exact filament, printed surface, fit, preparation, adhesive and curing process all matter. Test representative coupons before assembling a non-critical decorative object.
If the object must reopen, consider a removable connection first. Narrow end faces and overlapping surfaces create different joints. A larger area alone is not a strength guarantee. Decide the seam and connection together when splitting a model. For a delivered assembly, agree the assembled state; this guide does not promise that every adhesive or joint is offered.
Download the English project worksheet. Open it as UTF-8 CSV, replace the guide context with your project inputs and record observations separately from acceptance decisions. Blank cells do not indicate a passed check.
Identify the surfaces and limit the application
Record what happens if the joint releases. This exercise does not approve structural, electrical, medical or other safety functions. Identify filament manufacturer, grade, colour, printed face, layer direction and any finish. Two parts labelled PLA may have different surface conditions.
Match the coupon surface to the final part
Choose the finish before production, then reproduce that surface on the coupons. A bare-PLA test does not represent bonding to a coating. Draw overlap, intended gap, restraint and load direction.
Follow the exact adhesive's instructions
Use its specified cleaning, preparation, application, ventilation, protection and curing conditions. Do not combine unrelated chemical tips into a new procedure. Keep the product instructions and safety information with the trial record.
Record a trial that is ready to execute
Make equal coupons with the same printed skin and layer direction as the final part. Record amount, pressure, time, product batch and date. The fictional planning example concerns a display base without a structural function:
| Field | Planned entry |
|---|---|
| Coupons A and B | 40 × 20 mm pieces from one fictional revision |
| Contact area | 20 × 20 mm, face to face |
| Layer direction | Marked and identical |
| Preparation | Follow selected product; not selected yet |
| Adhesive and batch | Unknown; trial cannot start |
| Cure | Copy time and conditions from manufacturer |
| Assessment | Bounded manual separation attempt over a catch tray |
Because the product and instructions are unknown, this is a no-go record, not an executable bonding procedure. No joint was tested for the example.
Inspect only after the specified cure
Wait for the manufacturer's full time and conditions. Inspect displacement, visible gaps and surface damage. Apply only the predetermined bounded assessment where release cannot cause harm. Record whether failure occurs inside the adhesive, at the interface or within the printed coupon.
A hypothetical joint that stays intact while the adjacent print layer tears does not validate the whole object. It identifies a different weak point. Keep substrate, product batch, actual preparation, curing time and temperature, observation and decision together.
Stop for damage or inconsistent outcomes
Stop for softened surfaces, cracks, unexplained variation or missing product information. A short successful coupon test cannot establish long-term life, temperature performance or safety. Do not repeat with both more adhesive and a different cleaning method: change one factor under a new revision. Different results from supposedly identical coupons mean the process is not yet reproducible.
Include the joint in the production agreement
If assembling it yourself, request loose parts from the printing service and identify the contact faces your trial needs. Keep the chosen method and observations against the model revision.
If you need a complete object, discuss Print & Assembly with the part plan, visible seam and future access requirement. Confirm which connection and finish are included. The trial record supports that discussion without implying that every process is available.
